Hamburger cushions
A hamburger cushion looks very similar to a box cushion in that it has extra height, however, it has no welt and the height is achieved by pleating the corners on both the top and the bottom of the cushion cover. The two sides of the cover are joined together, as with a normal scatter cushion, and the central seam can be piped or trimmed with cord or a decorative edging.
Hamburger cushions are more robust than ordinary scatter cushions and are often used on sofas.
Basic construction
A zip is inserted into the bottom of the cushion cover with a concealing fold of fabric (as with a normal scatter cushion) and the corners are then rounded off on both the top and bottom sections of the cover. The fabric is pleated in identical positions on each of the corners.

Hamburger cushion - pleated edges

The skill in making a hamburger cushion with a really professional finish lies in making sure that the pleats on the corners match up on the top and bottom sections. In addition, if you are planning to use a patterned fabric take care to consider the following points:
  • Make sure the pattern matches up along the side seams
  • Consider how to centralise the pattern on both the top and bottom sections as with a normal scatter cushion
The hamburger cushion shown here has a ruched piped trim applied by top-stitching after the top and bottom sections have been joined together. It was not possible to achieve a perfect pattern match along the central seam due to the dimensions of the cushion and the pattern repeat, however, the line of checks runs straight across two sections of the cover.
