The pleat area should be the same size, or larger, than the spaces. If they are the same size then you will be working to 2 x fullness which will give a pleasantly gathered curtain. For a really rich effect you can work to 2 1/2 or even 3 times fullness, especially with lighter fabrics such as silk.
