homes2gardens offers
an ever expanding directory of useful sites covering a full range of topics to do with the
home and garden (rather obviously). This is one of only a few UK based specialised
directories and is organised into a logical and easily navigable structure with helpful
descriptions alongside each link. Definitely worth a look either simply for browsing or if
you're looking for a particular category of website.
We really liked this
site. Its clean, simple and surprisingly well organised directory of suppliers in the
fields of home improvement, architecture, landscape and garden, home decorating,
construction and real estate. Sub-categories are structured in a logical manner and links
are clearly labelled with the location and nature of the business or website to save you
time.
This site is a
little clutterd, however, it covers a wide range of categories of suppliers within the
following fields of DIY - build or remodel, repair or fix-it, decorate, outdoors, living
and finance.
This diverse and
informative website is packed with practical instructions and ideas, brought to you by the
recognised US magazine publication. The site is divided into sections covering topics such
as food, the garden, house and home, entertaining, crafts, the family and shopping. Last
time we visited interesting features included a series of 'quick and easy decorating'
articles, 'how to projects' and 'craft basics'.
This
site is both a useful directory of links to relevant websites
covering interior design and crafts, and a source of useful advice
tips and feature articles for styling your home.
The home and garden 'channel' within one of the leading US
women's portals, features a wide range of interesting and informative articles. At our
last visit, main categories included Decorating & Design, Home Repair, Ideas &
Inspiration, and a 'How to' section. There are also a number of busy message
boards and links to several excellent sites from top American home interest magazines
such as House Beautiful, Good
Housekeeping and Country Living.
B&Q's online store not only allows you to order a diverse
range of products (large and small) for home delivery, but also provides real added value
in terms of information services. The site offers useful DIY advice and inspiration
covering building, gardening, decorating and design, carpenty, plumbing and electrical.
'How to' articles are intelligently put together, specifying the skill level required,
tips on safety and a list of the items you will need to comlete the project (linking
directly to the product ready to purchase online). Other useful services include a DIY
glossary, buyers guides, calculators and a store locator.
Use this site to find screened reliable tradesman and
contractors throughout the UK, including builders, electricians, plumbers and decorators.
You'll also find an 'ask the expert' service in association with B&Q, information on
regulations, contracts, finance and other advice.
This site has two purposes, firstly to help US residents to find
professional, reliable contractors for a wide range of DIY projects and to provide design
and product ideas to get you started. The 'find a contractor' service is operated in
association with ImproveNet.
A directory of screened UK contractors and tradesman, with
insurance backed guarantees for extra peace of mind. Use their 24hr telephone callout
service to help find professional in an emergency, or their standard 'Find a Pro' service
online, to locate a wide range of busineses in your area - from carpenters to cleaning and
drainage specialists.
This website is based on the BBC DIY disaster rescue programme
and provides a range of useful articles including 'step by step' features, factsheets from
the series, expert advice questions and answers, and DIY project guides.
This is an inspiring and insightful online magazine providing a
wide range of interesting feature articles and other resources. The bonus is that House
Beautiful also offers a number of handy interactive tools including Interactive Windows. This tool allows you to 'mix and
match' window treatments such as curtains, blinds, shades, valances and swags, or to
select standalone treatments to view separately. Unfortunately, the last time we checked
the tool did not allow you to change the colours of fabrics displayed.
